講題摘要: There is a strong sense in which the morphosyntax and the discourse preferences of a given language evolve together and mutually shape one another. Grammar is seen as a name for the adaptive complex system of recurrent regularities that arise from communication. As in any dynamic complex adaptive system, while stabilized forms are the preferred states of the grammatical system, grammatical categories and constructions are known to be characterized by variation and gradience. In this talk I will explore a wide variety of linkages between grammar and interaction, and present evidence from Tsou, Squliq and other Formosan discourse data to demonstrate the complex interplay between language use, grammatical structure and cognition. Among the topics discussed are Squliq and Pazih case systems and the TAM system in Tsou as symptomatic of grammatical constructions as normativized rationalizations. I also argue that discourse data in Tsou and a number of other languages show that the clause structure in these languages is determined by transitivity rather than by thematicity, although discourse considerations largely determine the ultimate voice interpretations. Production data in Tsou and Squliq show that these speakers exhibit a strong tendency towards local recycling, with another slightly weaker tendency towards recycling of verb complex. If we take the frequency of occurrence of a structure to be indicative of its degree of entrenchment, then verb complex and NP are highly entrenched constituents in these languages.
